about

The riff on the ‘Lake' was something that I kept going back to during the years and was stored on a tape that had ideas that were not just extreme punk and doom oriented.
Stuff that was just different but following a darker trail of thoughts. And which was the same tape I originally handled to the singer after having met him at an audition for a singer for a black metal band I was playing in at the time.
I remember being underage and my friends shipping me from the back of the “Uonna Club" in Rome where I could share a smoke with the ‘massive' bouncer. On a Saturday they might play everything from alternative rock to goth and new wave.
I suspect something by the Stooges (and the Sisters’ rendition of them) might have unconsciously come into shaping the bass riff. When a drum machine was added it did sound like the Sisters’ rendition of course. Then switching from the
original disco type drum set to more acoustic sounds made it more like it might have been played by Killing Joke.
Enter the guitarist with his Killing Joke addiction, the
singer's love for Edgar Allan Poe, and the song eventually turned into what you're hearing. This is the version we
re-recorded on the second demo shortly before the guitarist leaving to form another band but at the same time helping until we found a valid replacement. If it wasn't for that help we could have never recorded any second demo perhaps.
The overdubs on the bass track were supposed to be a try, but the engineer had already taped over the improvisations so
a third track had to be recorded.

lyrics

In spring of youth, it was my lot
To haunt of the wide world a spot
The which I could not love the less —
So lovely was the loneliness
Of a wild lake, with black rock bound,
And the tall pines that towered around.
Oh — this is the Lake.
But when the Night had thrown her pall
Upon that spot, as upon all,
And the mystic wind went by
Murmuring in melody —
Then — ah then I would awake
To the terror of the lone lake.
Oh — this is the Lake.
Death was in that poisonous wave,
And in its gulf a fitting grave
For him who thence could solace bring
To his lone imagining —
Whose solitary soul could make
An Eden of that dim lake.
Oh — this is the Lake.
Yet that terror was not fright,
But a tremulous delight —
A feeling not the jewelled mine
Could teach or bribe me to define —
Nor Love — although the Love were thine.

about

Simon Dreams In Violet Rome, Italy

“Formed in '92 with voice, distorted bass and drums. Band's symbol comes from a sign placed on witches graves, which is jolly. The assurance of the old sound sustained through energetic expression rather than shallow noise. Two MC's through Energeia, ‘Simon Dreams In Violet' ('93), ‘Dreaming The Lost' ('94) and the self-released MC ‘Follia’ ('95) on their own label Interior Deus.” Mick Mercer ... more
