‘Before I Wake' was ironically called ‘London’ in the original version we were playing back in 1996. This version was
recorded in London at ‘Wooden Lung' studio flat three years later. I remember a friend asking which band we were covering when he listened to the song. It was too good and too
different to be one of our songs perhaps and we had already started playing some covers by other bands to do something different. A Carcass-like guitar riff played by Leisure Hive
guitarist, Dan, layered on top of a more sober L.A. death-rock backing with inspired haunting vocals from Womb singer, Greg. The only song that actually got to be fully rendered as a promo off a bunch from a session of four gothic rock oriented songs. The original masters were at some point taped over, so this is what is left of that long afternoon at Lloyd and Joanne's place in Leytonstone trying to sync the synth overdubs. A digital eight track mixer was used and no sequencer. The recording is essentially raw, but the only
rendering of the unreleased material by the nineties
darkwave/goth outfit Simon Dreams In Violet. Unfortunately both the tape sessions with Lloyd of Naevus singing an
alternate version with a different arabian riff and the
original recording are lost someplace somewhere.
